The younger women are to be trained ‘to be busy at home.’ To be a ‘homemaker’ or ‘housewife’ is a noble task. In the home the wife and mother can make the greatest contribution toward a healthy family life. A society that places a higher value on the paycheck a wife brings to the family than on what she does for her family at home will experience the breakdown of family life. The woman’s role in the family is not determined by society but by the Lord who created man and woman and established the family. Proverbs 31:10-31 is an inspired description of a ‘wife of noble character.’ It does not rule out her functioning as a ‘breadwinner,’ but does stress her place as a ‘homemaker.’
